Certificate in Applied Science

Why Study a Certificate in Applied Science?

Science and its application, underpins many jobs in today's world.
Heath professionals, farmers, mechanics and I.T. professionals are only a few of the jobs that need to use science in what they do on a daily basis.

An understanding of science underpins much of our development over the past century; and is poised to cause a faster and faster rate of development into the future.

If you want to understand the world around you, see the opportunities for a better life (at wok and outside work); you need to be scientifically literate.  This does not mean that everyone needs to become a scientist; but it does mean that lacking in an understanding of science, may become a disadvantage; while knowing more about science can be an advantage.

Studying a certificate level course in science may well give you an edge over your competition  in business or employment;  not only in a blatantly scientific job, but perhaps anywhere.

Avoiding becoming Over Qualified
It is natural to think that doing more study will give you more opportunities. This is how most people think when they are considering training for a new career.

- It is true that the best jobs usually require higher qualifications
- It is also true that there are far fewer jobs at the top of a profession than in the middle or at the bottom
- When employers look for someone for a top job; they may look for high qualifications; but there are normally lots of highly qualified candidates, and very few jobs ....so the decision to employ someone at the top is usually based upon much more than just the qualification
 - The qualification may put you in the running; but getting selected to run a marathon with 100 others doesn't guarantee any level of success.

If you apply for a low level job but have high level qualifications; you may be sending a message to the employer that you are wanting something better; and you only want their job because you can't get what you really want.  This is often how employers see it!  Many employers would rather a lesser qualified person who is content, and committed to their job; than a highly qualified person who is always looking to find something better.

Start with a Certificate and have Better Long Term Prospects

If you study a science certificate first; then get some experience (voluntary or paid); you will put yourself in a position of being able to  pursue a much wider variety and larger number of jobs; without appearing over qualified.
Once you get yourself into employment,  and on a career path; you can then continue studying and climbing to higher levels of employment.  This approach may not begin with a highly paid, and interesting first job; but it is usually a path that is easier to get onto.
