Drought and Rural Industries in Australia – Opportunities
Australian Horticulture and Agriculture have been hurt by several years of extended drought. As a result jobs have disappeared, businesses have shrunk and much of the industry has been reorganized and restructured.
Despite the doom and gloom being spoken by some, the fact remains that over 10% of Australia’s GDP still comes from agriculture; people still need agricultural produce (unless eating is about to go out of fashion), and with increasing concerns over the environment, the need for plants and landscape work is likely to increase rather than fade away.
The future actually looks bright for anyone remaining in, or coming into these industries. There are less schools training fewer people; and as the demand starts to turn a corner and increase, it appears we are facing a real shortage of agricultural and horticultural experts in Australia over the next decade.
Now is the time to train –particularly in higher level courses with a strong science or management component.
