Opportunities
Marketing management offers you the opportunity to work in a fast based, creative and interesting job, where you can see the results of your work.
There are many opportunities in marketing as businesses, charities, governments, and most organisations use marketing staff to publicise their products and services. Even if they are not trying to sell something, they will be trying to let the public know. For example, a charity may try to encourage donations by using marketing.
With the internet, there are more and more marketing opportunities, besides posters, TV adverts and newspaper and magazine adverts, there are also almost limitless opportunities for marketing online and on social media.
Risks and Challenges
Hours can sometimes be irregular, as you may be required to travel, meet new clients, or attend conferences, trade shows and meetings. This will particularly be the case when a new campaign or initiative is being developed or launched.
Employers and clients will also expect results. They are using a marketing manager to sell their products and services and/or increase their public profile, so there will be pressure on you to get results.
How to become a Marketing Manager
Most are likely to begin their career by either studying marketing or working in a sales job. Learning the theory and practical experience are both important.
In small organisations; the marketing manager may need to multi-task with few or even no staff to help them. This can sometimes be a good first step toward a more senior position later on.
In large organisations, a marketing manager may have been a sales or marketing executive or assistant for several years before moving into a more senior role.
Often a marketing manager will have worked their way up through the marketing industry. Employers and clients are usually more interested in your track record, industry knowledge and skills than specific formal qualifications. Marketing managers have often held other roles within marketing, such as marketing assistant.
It is useful to take a course to gain entry to marketing as a career in the first place, such as a Marketing Psychology course, Sales Skills, Advertising and Promotions or similar. This will give you a good grounding into marketing and improve your chances of getting a job in marketing. Degree courses are often also used in marketing, but experience and your track record is more important. Once you are in marketing, you may be required to take further qualifications.
