Disability is a broad term

Disabilities can be issues of reduced mobility to sensory issues (eg. blindness) through to learning disabilities. Every disabled person faces unique challenges, and their needs for support are just as varied.

People with disabilities haven't been treated well, nor given the same opportunities as people without disabilities. They may have been discriminated against and at various times in history been persecuted, institutionalised, or even imprisoned. Unless cared for by their families, disabled persons could often be found on the fringes of society, unemployed, underpaid, and had little social support.

Today's world has largely changed, with a greater understanding of different disabilities.

The Disability Rights Movement has become a global effort incorporating many different organisations has fought for equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone with a disability. This movement sought to change society’s perception of disability by challenging stereotypes and promoting equal treatment. From the 1960s onwards, disability advocates have brought together people with different kinds of disabilities to argue for all their rights. Many laws and acts have been passed in different countries to protect against discrimination.

Disability advocates encourage society to shift from a position of merely tolerating disability towards one of actively supporting diversity in others.

This course helps you to appreciate the scope and nature of disability support, and the many practical initiatives that are applied to provide that  support.
