This subject has 8 lessons as follows:

Lesson 1. Introduction

  • Performance Psychology, Exercise Psychology, Environmental Influences, Aspects of Sports Psychology, Applying Sports Psychology.

Lesson 2. Psychological Traits of Successful Athletes 

  • Personality Inventory, Cognitive Techniques.

Lesson 3. State of Mind.

  • Anxiety and Arousal, Anxiety, Physiology of Anxiety, Psychology of Anxiety, Arousal, How to Maximise Psychological State, Focusing (or Centering).

Lesson 4. Motivation

  • Motivation is the internal impulse that causes increasingly energetic action in a particular direction.
  • Basic Principles, Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation Factors Affecting Motivation, Motivation for fun, Slimming for fun.

Lesson 5. Aggression

  • Mental Rehearsal, Error Parking, Using Self Consciousness, Word Association, Anger, Conflict,  Measuring Aggression, Simulated Practice, e-Event Procedure, Reliving Success, Positive, Conflict Handling Techniques.

Lesson 6. Leadership & Coaching

  • A Coach’s Role, Getting Attention, Questioning, Punishment.

Lesson 7. Team Dynamics

  •  Group cohesion,  Forming, Storming,   Norming,  Performing, Traits of an Effective Team, Suitable membership,  Appropriate Leadership, Commitment to the Team, Concern for Achieving, Effective Work Methods, Well Organised Team Procedures, Ability To Take Criticism, Creative Strength, Positive Relationships, Positive Environment.

Lesson 8. Special Groups

  • Stress, Post Game/Season Evaluation, Gender Differences, Elite Female Athletes, Special Considerations with Female Athletes, Disabled Persons. Children, Readiness, Dropping out.

 

THE MIND AND BODY ARE INTRINSICALLY CONNECTED

An elite athlete can do remarkable things when their mind is determined, and trained to push beyond the point where others might give up. Just as the mind can over ride the physical condition of the human body; the physical condition can also over ride the mind. 
Sports psychology needs to not only understand the mind and how it can dominate the body; but it is equally as important to understand the body and how it can impact on the mind.

Body Temperature

Temperature stress can cause aches and pains; and being physically uncomfortable can become a source of psychological stress.

Heating the body on a cold day or cooling on a hot day can reduce this physical stress. This may be important before and after sport. It can also be important to understand temperature during sport; particularly when the sporting performance has a lengthy duration, during very cold or very hot weather.

There are lots of different ways to heat or cool the body, including:

  • Heating a building or room with a wood fire, gas, oil or electric heater
  • Cooling a building or room with reverse cycle air conditioning, evaporative coolers or fans.
  • Bathing in hot or cold water, in a bath, shower, swimming pool or spa.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing.
  • Drinking cold or hot beverages.

Sometimes certain parts of the body may benefit from treatment, because it may be only one part of the body that is too hot or too cold; for example, applying heat to sore muscles or cold to an infected part of the body. The body’s natural reaction to infection is to raise the body’s temperature to counter the infection; whether an ant bite or a bacterial infection. If the temperature rises too much or too fast though, this can cause complications; so cooling may be beneficial to manage the level of physical stress.

Cooling or warming parts of the body may be achieved in various ways including:

  • Wheat packs heated in a microwave oven.
  • Cold packs or ice packs, cooled in a freezer.
  • Foot baths.
  • Electric heat pads.
  • Sponge baths (Wiping tepid waster over the face or elsewhere).
  • Clothing, or blankets covering one part of the body but not other parts.

Each lesson includes set tasks, and is completed with an assignment which the student submits to their course tutor.  The tutor will mark the assignment and return this to the student with comments and suggestions for further reading.

Meet some of our academics

Tracey Jones (psychology)B.Sc. (Hons) (Psychology), M.Soc.Sc (social work), DipSW (social work), PGCE (Education), PGD (Learning Disability Studies) Tracey began studying psychology in 1990. She has a wide range of experience within the psychology and social work field, particularly working with people with learning disabilities. She is also qualified as a teacher and now teaches psychology and social work related subjects. She has been a book reviewer for the British Journal of Social Work and has also written many textbooks, blogs, articles and ebooks on psychology, writing, sociology, child development and more. She has had also several short stories published.
Jacinda ColeJacinda has expertise in psychology and horticulture. She holds a BSc (hons) in Psychology and a Masters in Psychology (Clinical) and also trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the London Centre for Psychotherapy. In horticulture she has a Certificate in Garden Design and ran her own landscaping and garden design business for a number of years. Jacinda also has many years experience in course development and educational writing.
