COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Course Duration: The course requires 100 hours of study. We find that most students complete 100 hours in three to six months, but it does depend on you and how much time you have available for studying.

Lesson 1. Introduction

  • Free Will versus Determinism, Developmental and Interactive Expressions of Behaviour, Nature versus Nurture, Influence of Environment on Learning Behaviour, Modelling and Conformity, Conditioning involves Certain Environmental Factors which Encourage Learning to Take Place, Classical Conditioning, Operant Conditioning, Reinforcement & Punishment

Lesson 2. Understanding the Employees Thinking

  • Sensation and perception, thinking and day dreaming, the Gestalt approach, unconscious and conscious psychic elements. explaining behaviour, knowledge of brain processes, personal interpretation of a given situation, instinct.

Lesson 3.Terminology

  • including: Mating, Curiosity, Maternal, Acquiring, Repulsion, Constructiveness, Rivalry, Laughter, Fighting, Walking, Swallowing, Play, Imitation, Sleep, Modesty, Domineering, Religion, Self Asserting, Sneezing, Thirst, Cleanliness, Workmanship, Parenting, Food seeking, Flight, Collecting, Sympathy.

Lesson 3. Personality & Temperament

  • Mature & immature temperaments (e.g. Sanguine, Melancholic, Choleric, Phlegmatic), emotional types, fear, intelligence, knowledge, deviation, etc.

Lesson 4. Psychological Testing

  • The Application Form; Psychological Test; The Interview; Intelligence Tests; Laws of Learning; Devising Tests; Selecting Appropriate Tests.

Lesson 5. Management & Managers

  • Qualities of Managers, Understanding morale, discipline, training, etc

Lesson 6. The Work Environment

  • Noise, Space, Light, Temperature, Speed of Work, etc. Accidents, Breakages, Fatigue etc.

Lesson 7. Motivation and Incentives

  • Maslow’s model of self actualisation, Security, Money, Ambition, Companionship, Social reinforcement, Labour wastage, etc.

Lesson 8. Recruitment

  • Ways of seeking applicants, types of interview, ways of selecting staff.

Lesson 9. Social Considerations

  • Group Behaviour, Conformity, Industrial Groups, The Hawthorne Effect

Lesson 10. Abnormalities and Disorders

  • Psychosis Neurosis Personality Disorders, Variance, Partial Disability (eg. arm.leg injuries; epilepsy, digestive disorders etc.), The Psycho Neurotic

  • Discuss basic concepts that may be relevant to understanding industrial psychology.
    Identify similarities and differences that occur in the way different employees perceive their workplace.
  • Discuss the effect of personality and temperament upon industrial psychology.
    Identify applications for psychological testing in industrial management.
  • Discuss the psychology of management.
  • Identify ways that the work environment might impact upon the psychology of people in a workplace.
  • Explain how motivation influences work productivity.
  • Discuss the application of psychology to recruitment.
  • Explain the impact of social factors upon work productivity.
  • Discuss the significance of psychological disorders or abnormalities in a workplace.

 

WHERE CAN YOU USE INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY?

There are many applications for theories and practices of industrial psychology which do not require an individual to be a qualified occupational or organisational psychologist, and it is not only larger organisations and businesses which can benefit from such insights.

Knowledge of the fundamentals of industrial psychology is beneficial to a range of professionals such as managers, team leaders, supervisors, foremen and others who are in charge of other employees, or who are responsible for the welfare of other workers. It is also useful knowledge for entrepreneurs, business owners and developers. In fact, anyone in a business operations or managerial role may be able to perform in their role more effectively and in turn help to improve the functioning and productivity of their business through recruiting wisely and obtaining greater awareness of people working under them and the conditions in which they are working.

But the usefulness of such knowledge is not limited to those in senior positions, and it can be applied in many different employment settings from commercial businesses to public enterprises, and from large to small organisations. It is also beneficial for employees to have some awareness of work groups and training principles.
pIn all types of organisations, knowledge of organisational psychology and related fields may be beneficial to everyone. It can serve to guide recruitment and training of staff and to establish productive work teams, suitable team leaders, satisfactory work environments, and to help employees fulfil their potential.

Some aspects of organisational psychology theory can even be beneficial individuals when they seek to employ others for part-time work (e.g. cleaners), seasonal work (e.g. gardeners), or to undertake contracts such as building work around the home. Other aspects may relate to freelance contractors employed by agencies or by businesses directly. Occupational psychology is therefore relevant to a broad range of individuals, perhaps more so than some people would initially think.

Example of a Set Task

Discuss the following questions with one or two friends, and make notes of the answers you consider.

a). Discuss the environmental circumstances that you feel have affected your life.

b).In your opinion, to what extent are mental characteristics inherited?

c).'In certain conditions, a committee may pass a resolution for which no member of the committee will hold themselves responsible'. What is your interpretation of the meaning of the previous statement.

d)."The environment can give or withhold the requisite stimuli for the development of mental abilities". Discuss this statement.

Interview at least four people. Two of these should have a management role in a business or similar organisation. Two should be involved in a non-managerial position. Ask each of them such questions as:

  • The role of morale and discipline in their workplace.
  • Do they feel that they have good morale and discipline in their workplaces? Why do they think this?
  • Who do they feel should be responsible for ensuring suitable levels of morale and discipline in their workplace (e.g. management, workplace groups, all employees, etc.)?
  • How is morale and discipline maintained in their workplace?
  • Psychological Testing in the Workplace.

Tracey Jones (psychology)B.Sc. (Hons) (Psychology), M.Soc.Sc (social work), DipSW (social work), PGCE (Education), PGD (Learning Disability Studies) Tracey began studying psychology in 1990. She has a wide range of experience within the psychology and social work field, particularly working with people with learning disabilities. She is also qualified as a teacher and now teaches psychology and social work related subjects. She has been a book reviewer for the British Journal of Social Work and has also written many textbooks, blogs, articles and ebooks on psychology, writing, sociology, child development and more. She has had also several short stories published.
John MasonMr Mason has worked 45+ years in Writing, Education, Horticulture and Recreation. His experience in both public & private sectors is extensive; particularly across Australia and England.
Jacinda ColeJacinda has expertise in psychology and horticulture.
