THE MODULES
Each of the modules studied for the qualification - Certificate In Personal Energy Management, are summarised below.  Please click on the module title for further details and lesson breakdowns.

Personal Energy Management VRE105
This 7 lesson module looks at the management of personal energy.  Every day we expend energy on a variety of tasks.  How we approach and complete these tasks will determine our use of our own energy.  Seeking to accomplish a task at work in order to achieve a positive outcome can be seen to require less energy input than approaching a task with a view to avoid a negative outcome.  Managing personal energy, adopting the right approach, can lead to increased vigour in your work and better outcomes.  The module includes lessons on ways to effective energy management, emotional and intellectual energies, and stress and time management.

Health And Wellbeing VRE102
Health And Wellbeing is an 8 lesson module which provides an overview all areas which impact upon an individual’s health and wellbeing on a day to day level.  The module considers the problems of lifestyle which different age groups encounter and the difficulties in maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.  As well as looking areas such as stress management, the module includes lessons on preventative health and alternative medicines.

Stress Management VPS100
The 8 lesson module in Stress Management will provide the student with an understanding of how our bodies react to stress, and how this may be coped with.  We look at how stress may be controlled, and how we may relax.  Stress is a notable factor in everyone’s lives, and different people have different ways in dealing with it.  There are many factors which contribute to this – different personalities, our approach to diet (“we are what we eat”), how we view ourselves, how we manage our career, to name but a few.  This detailed module will guide the student through all of these areas and much more, enabling them to appreciate their own situations as well as providing the knowledge to let them help others in managing their stress.

Anger Management BPS111
This 9 lesson module will help students to learn to understand anger and explore techniques that can be useful in the management of anger.  The module explores different theories relating to emotion and anger looking at different therapies, techniques, and counselling that can be used to manage anger.  Important areas for consideration are individuals with mental health issues, personality disorders, and children and adolescents; there are separate lessons dedicated to these.  A problem based learning project completes the module, where the student will create and present a plan of anger management for an individual experiencing serious anger difficulties.

Human Nutrition I BRE102
This 9 lesson module provides a broad introduction to the important elements of nutrition and how it affects human health.  Students will learn about the digestive system and how it works.  The module looks at the different food groups and the relevance of the different nutritional elements – fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water.  Students will understand the basic daily intake requirements for a human and be able to determine specific dietary requirements for individuals.  The module concludes with a lesson on disorders related to food and diet.

Nutritional Therapy BRE211
Nutritional Therapy is a 9 lesson module concerned with the approach of using nutrients to maintain or restore optimal nutrition and health for an individual.  The module looks specifically at allergies and food intolerance, diabetes, heart disease, cancers, and other conditions and disorders.  The module is concluded with a lesson looking at the planning of diets for someone with a medical condition.

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE LOW ENERGY?

Energy levels become low when the human body is unhealthy. This may be due to an illness you are aware of; but all it can just as easily be due to a physical or mental condition which the person is not conscious of.  The way to manage personal energy levels must always start with becoming aware of both the state of the physical body, and also the state of the mind. Once an individual understands their stater of being, they can then move forward to improve their overall well being.

Altering the Physical State of the Body

Obvious and easy ways to adjust the physical state of a body include resting or drugs.  Bodies get stressed when they are over worked and given inadequate time to rest and recuperate. Simply having a holiday, sleeping longer hours, or doing less physical activity can sometimes be the answer.

Physical Stress happens when we use muscles beyond their capacity. Over used muscles become sore, even very painful. They may be inflamed, displaced (eg. twisted), and in extreme situations can become torn or worse.

Even fit people can suffer, if they over use a muscle that they don't normally use so much. This may happen when you break your routine in any way; from sitting at your desk all weekend when you have not done that for years, or using vibrating garden machinery a lot more than normal, because there has been exceptional weather resulting in exceptional plant growth that needs mowing or pruning.

  • It isn’t always the case, but for a person who works two jobs and only sleeps a few hours a night - the simplest way to relax might be to spend fewer hours working and more hours in bed.
  • For a “fitness junkie” who exercises excessively, stress may be a result of pushing the body to do things it should not be doing. Feeling stressed can be a natural response from a physical body, trying to tell the mind to slow down. The easiest way to relax may be to listen to the mind and spend more time sitting still.
  • Diet can often be an unseen factor. Over-eating, under-eating, improper gut bacteria, food sensitivities and other diet related issues can be a partial or full cause of stress in a body; and if diagnosed and treated appropriately, the solution can sometimes be as simple as changing one’s diet.
  • Stretch -Stretching sore muscles can provide relief, and even help speed up repair of a problem; provided it is done properly. Visiting a physiotherapist or attending a Pilates class may give you some guidance. Improper stretching can exaggerate problems though.
  • Taking pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs, or other pharmaceuticals may have a place in responding to biogenic stressors; but these are strategies that come with risks ranging from developing addictions to masking the warning signs of other and potentially more serious issues
  • Physical support - Braces (eg neck brace) or strapping, may be used by therapists to hold muscles in the proper position. When a muscle is over worked, other muscles can try to compensate for the stress or pain caused, and the compensation can throw a body out of muscular balance
  • Heat or Cold - Some physical problems respond to heat, but others can be aggravated by heat and are better treated with cold. It is important to know which to use and when.
  • Don't delay getting professional advice - for muscular stress, a physiotherapist, chiropractor, sports therapist or osteopath may be more appropriate than a general practitioner; as a first point of call.

Altering the Body’s State of Mind

If you can get a person to start thinking differently (or stop thinking) about a psychosocial stressor, the stress that has been building should diminish.
This may be achieved by making the issue less important to them; perhaps by either:

  • Giving them something different to think about (diverting their attention).
  • Helping them process the issue (ie. moving their thinking from a “worrying” stage to a “dealt with” or “past history” stage.

Many of us will set ourselves big goals

  • I will lose three stones by the end of the year.
  • I am going to write a novel.
  • I want promotion in my job.

These goals may all be achievable, but sometimes we can feel like a failure if we do not do what we want.  If we think we are going to write a novel by the end of the year, when it doesn’t happen, we feel a failure. Repeatedly failing to write that novel or lose that weight can make us feel like we don’t succeed at anything, so we feel stressed and we give up even trying. We convince ourselves we are failures and will never do what we want BUT if we can give ourselves smaller goals, we can start to feel more successful.  If we can succeed at that small step – write the first chapter, lose 1/2 kilogram a week for six weeks, enrol on a course to help me get my promotion – then we can start to feel like we are succeeding, we are getting somewhere and this can help us to change the negative ways that we think.  It is about having the big dream, but knowing that it takes little steps to get there.
