Educational Psychology BPS105
By understanding how people learn, you can become more effective in your approach to helping them to learn. This 7 lesson module looks at the theories of development and learning. Students will consider how people learn, how information is processed and how it is retained. As student’s progress through the module, they will look at how to determine the needs of individuals, which coupled with their studies on how people learn will provide them with the necessary tools to be able to effectively tailor their methods for the benefit of the individual. The right approach of course is important, and the module is concluded with a lesson on motivation which looks at different motivational theories and factors which may affect an individual’s motivation.
Motivation VBS111
Through 8 lessons, the Motivation module looks at paths to the motivation of individuals and groups. It considers reinforcement, conditioning, and reward as well as looking at the effect of group influences on personal motivation, and other less direct forms such as space and time management. Being able to properly motivate individuals provides tangible benefits for everyone in a multitude of environments, whether enhancing learning by enabling the student to be more receptive, or increasing productivity in the workplace by engendering a positive culture, you improve the outcome for the individual/group both in terms of the direct result but also for their own personal wellbeing. The module concludes with a special project where a student will apply their newfound knowledge to plan strategies for improving individual’s motivation in the work place.
Classroom Delivery Skills BGN106
Having the knowledge to share with others is one thing, but being able to educate them is another if your ability to share it is limited. This module covers the key areas of effectively delivering the message. Through 8 lessons, students will look at the principles of effective communication in the classroom and factors that may hinder this. Communication is a two way process, the giver and the recipient both need to take part in the communication – the recipient needs to listen in order to hear the message, whilst the giver needs to listen to ensure that the recipient has understood the message. The module looks at listening skills, obstacles that prevent proper listening and issues that may arise from this. Lessons considering motivation, stress and conflict management and how to mediate and negotiate complete the skills covered by this module.
Instructional Skills BGN101
This is an 11 lesson module concerned with effective communication in a training or workplace environment. The module considers the different ways to communicate and how to plan, deliver, and assess training. Important factors in effective training are covered by lessons where students will learn how to determine training requirements in a workplace, how these should be delivered, understanding the needs of the learners and how to motivate them. The trainer also needs to be capable of influencing the recipients of training – although motivation plays an important part to the success of training, a trainer may need to be able to persuade recipients to adopt an open or positive outlook in respect of proposed training or messages that they are trying to convey. The module concludes with a lesson on the training of assessors and how to prepare trainees to meet the requirements of the competency standards for assessors.
Leadership BBS110
Through 7 lessons, this module will teach students the steps to becoming a good leader. The module looks at the different styles and approaches to leadership and the qualities required by those intending to lead. As well as being able to think, effective leaders need to have the right approach, develop relationships with others appropriate to their situation, and be able to communicate effectively, and influence and be assertive when needed. The final lesson of the module brings together the content of the preceding lessons by asking students to consider and plan a project or event.
The Elective Modules
Students are to choose one of the following:
Child Psychology BPS104
This 12 lesson module is concerned with the developmental stages of children from newborn and infants through school age years. The module considers all of the significant areas such as senses, emotions, socialism, cognitive development, learning, and language. Notable psychological research and theories are explored within the module providing students with a balanced approach to ideas and concepts. The module also includes sections which look at influences both within the family structure and externally, such as influences from school and peers.
Developmental Psychology BPS210
This 10 lesson module looks at the psychological development of individuals throughout their lives. Different stages in an individual’s life bring about different influences and different challenges. This module seeks to help the student to better understand how people develop, through all ages of life with lessons on each of the key life stages: Early childhood, Middle childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood, Late Adulthood. Students will look at cognitive, social, and moral development as relevant through each of these stages before then considering the potential challenges faced through each stage of a person’s life. Having a heightened awareness of developmental psychology is a big advantage when dealing with people in any capacity. It helps you understand work colleagues, clients, friends and family members and is a very valuable tool for teachers, managers, counsellors and welfare workers amongst many other professions.
