Working in Agriculture

Have you ever dreamed of working within agriculture, perhaps owning a small holding, or even thinking about a complete change in your career?

Perhaps you already work within the agricultural industry but would like to expand on your knowledge, or maybe you have employees who would benefit from some continued professional development.

If so, then it is never too late to follow your dreams or expand your learning.

There are so many rewards when working in the agricultural industry.  You get to work hands-on with different animals, including being involved in the beauty of new-borns and watching them grow.  You will work with land management, environment management and begin using the natural seasons to their maximum benefits.  Not to mention working in the fresh air and open countryside, so if you do love being outdoors then this may well be the right career for you.

If you are already working in the industry, then you will already understand the rewards, but do you or your employees really understand the many aspects of farming?

If you plan to work in agriculture then you will need to have a good understanding of the many practices of farming.  These may include:

  • Animal husbandry, and how to generally care for them.
  • Animal health, and diseases.
  • Animal anatomy and physiology, so you have a full understanding of the animals you keep.
  • Animal behaviour.
  • Animal welfare.
  • Nutrition, and proper feeding.
  • Breeding.
  • Beef production.
  • Understanding the rearing of calves.
  • Dairy cattle, and how to produce maximum milk yield.
  • An understanding of different species, such as sheep, pigs, poultry and goats.
  • Agronomy.
  • Crop production.
  • Pasture management.
  • Soil management.
  • Management of farm, animals and land.
  • Diversifying your product, and marketing your business.

Although practical and actual hands-on experience is very important, it is also vital to learn as much as you can about the animals, farming practices, farm management, laws and legislation.

Improve your knowledge and skills of farm management and practices.

There is so much to know and learn about farming.  ACS Distance Education offer a wide selection of agriculture courses from Diplomas, Certificates and even shorter fantastic CPD courses.
