An Alternative Approach

SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Years 11 & 12 (K12) are the traditional route you would take to enter tertiary training (at either university or a vocational college).

THIS IS NO LONGER ALWAYS THE CASE!

OPTION 1: Study Vocational Subjects as part of year 11 or 12.

Changes in the Australian education system (throughout the late 1990’s), have been blurring the distinction between secondary education.

Secondary schools are increasingly offering another option to the traditional year 11 and 12 studies.

This involves taking vocational studies, previously taught at a vocational college (eg. TAFE or Polytechnic), as part of or a substitute for more traditional subjects such as history, chemistry, biology or geography. By following this option, the year 11 and/or 12 graduate will complete a secondary education and have a head start towards obtaining a certificate or diploma.

OPTION 2: Study a Vocational Certificate instead of senior Secondary School
(eg. HSC, High School Diploma, etc)

Following year 9, 10 or 11, a student can leave secondary school and enroll in a certificate (or start an apprenticeship). Once they have completed the certificate, this will act as a prerequisite for a diploma or advanced diploma course. Upon completing a diploma or advanced diploma, this will enable them to do a degree or post graduate university course (provided the diploma has appropriate recognition).

POSSIBLE SCENARIO

An alternative scenario might be:

A student leaves secondary school at the end of year 10 and spends the next 6 to 12 months studying a Certificate in Horticulture. They then enroll in an Advanced Diploma in Horticulture, which requires a further 3 years of full time study.

At the end of this period, (4 years after completing year 10), they have a certificate, and advanced diploma, and are able to either enter the workforce with a fully professional qualification; or go on to post graduate courses.

Traditionally, a person would do 2 years of secondary education plus a further 3 years of a diploma or degree, before being in this position.

THIS ALTERNATIVE COURSE OF ACTION SAVED A YEAR OF STUDY,

GETTING THE PERSON INTO THE WORKPLACE ONE YEAR EARLIER!
