WHERE CAN YOU USE INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY?

There are many applications for theories and practices of industrial psychology which do not require an individual to be a qualified occupational or organisational psychologist, and it is not only larger organisations and businesses which can benefit from such insights.

Knowledge of the fundamentals of industrial psychology is beneficial to a range of professionals such as managers, team leaders, supervisors, foremen and others who are in charge of other employees, or who are responsible for the welfare of other workers. It is also useful knowledge for entrepreneurs, business owners and developers. In fact, anyone in a business operations or managerial role may be able to perform in their role more effectively and in turn help to improve the functioning and productivity of their business through recruiting wisely and obtaining greater awareness of people working under them and the conditions in which they are working.

But the usefulness of such knowledge is not limited to those in senior positions, and it can be applied in many different employment settings from commercial businesses to public enterprises, and from large to small organisations. It is also beneficial for employees to have some awareness of work groups and training principles.
pIn all types of organisations, knowledge of organisational psychology and related fields may be beneficial to everyone. It can serve to guide recruitment and training of staff and to establish productive work teams, suitable team leaders, satisfactory work environments, and to help employees fulfil their potential.

Some aspects of organisational psychology theory can even be beneficial individuals when they seek to employ others for part-time work (e.g. cleaners), seasonal work (e.g. gardeners), or to undertake contracts such as building work around the home. Other aspects may relate to freelance contractors employed by agencies or by businesses directly. Occupational psychology is therefore relevant to a broad range of individuals, perhaps more so than some people would initially think.

Example of a Set Task

Discuss the following questions with one or two friends, and make notes of the answers you consider.

a). Discuss the environmental circumstances that you feel have affected your life.

b).In your opinion, to what extent are mental characteristics inherited?

c).'In certain conditions, a committee may pass a resolution for which no member of the committee will hold themselves responsible'. What is your interpretation of the meaning of the previous statement.

d)."The environment can give or withhold the requisite stimuli for the development of mental abilities". Discuss this statement.

Interview at least four people. Two of these should have a management role in a business or similar organisation. Two should be involved in a non-managerial position. Ask each of them such questions as:

  • The role of morale and discipline in their workplace.
  • Do they feel that they have good morale and discipline in their workplaces? Why do they think this?
  • Who do they feel should be responsible for ensuring suitable levels of morale and discipline in their workplace (e.g. management, workplace groups, all employees, etc.)?
  • How is morale and discipline maintained in their workplace?
  • Psychological Testing in the Workplace.
