A CERTIFICATE CAN KICK START A CAREER
... but life-long success requires a lifelong learning.

Today's world is continually changing - and faster than ever before. This means that our knowledge and understanding of child behaviour keeps changing, and the way in which children behave is changing too as the things that affect them in the world change.

This constant state of flux presents both challenges and opportunities to anyone working in the field of child and youth support services.

The key to success in your career will be to embrace change and be prepared to keep learning, improving, and advancing your ability to work with children and youth.

We are learning more all the time about child psychology. It is an area that is constantly changing as our knowledge of the subject evolves. Things that were never heard of a hundred years ago are now common knowledge – think of autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – these conditions were not even recognised in the past, but now are now well-known conditions.

Never assume that what you know now will not be expanded upon, or changed to meet with contemporary thinking, in the future. Using ADHD as an example, not only has it become a recognised childhood disorder but at the beginning of the twentieth century it was thought to be a result of poor parenting techniques and should be resolved with discipline. By the 1960's it was thought to be due to brain damage, in the 1980's it became known as attention deficit disorder or ADD, and only more recently has it been renamed ADHD and different subtypes named according to the predominance of hyperactivity and inattention, or the presence of both. The classification of this disorder may well change further as we learn more about it.

You can continue learning through your own personal experiences, observations, and research, as well as through keeping abreast of current findings.
